Campbell High School Foreign Language Course Offering

FOREIGN LANGUAGE
French (Level 1 – 5)
This is an introduction to the French language, which includes the four language skills:  listening, speaking, writing, and reading.  An in-depth study of French culture will be an integral part of this course.  
AP French Literature/Language
This course is designed to prepare students to take the AP language test by in-depth study of grammar and intensive practice of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These courses are a full year commitment.  Recommended Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation
German (Levels 1 – 6)
This course is an introduction to the German language, which includes language skills, enrichment opportunities, and oral communication.  An in-depth study of the German culture will be an integral part of this course.
Japanese (Levels 1 - 3)
This course is primarily a distance-learning class in which excellent attendance is mandatory.  Completion of Japanese I & II will meet
college prep requirements.  
Latin (Levels 1 – 4)
This is an introduction to the Latin language and Roman civilization.  The course will focus on Latin vocabulary, grammar, translation, English derivatives, and Roman geography, daily life, history, and mythology.
Spanish (Levels 1 – 5)
This is an introduction to the Spanish language, which includes the four language skills:  listening, speaking, writing, and reading.  An in-depth study of Spanish culture will be an integral part of this course.  
AP Spanish Literature/Language

Spanish for Spanish Speakers I
This course is designed for Spanish Heritage Speakers and will focus on advanced skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Essay development and novel reading are integral to this course.  
Spanish for Spanish Speakers II
This course is for Spanish Heritage Speakers and will focus on advanced skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Essay development, novel reading, and an in-depth study of culture, literature, and history of the Spanish-speaking world are integral to this course. Prerequisite:  Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1

ESOL
IEL Communication Skills (I-II)  
This course will focus on the acquisition of social and instructional language across the four language domains as prescribed in WIDA Standard 1. This course is to be offered in conjunction with IEL I: Reading and Listening in the Content areas.
Prerequisite:  Placement by IWC or ESOL Department Head
IEL Reading and Listening in the Content Areas I
This course supports and enhances literacy and listening skills necessary for success in the content areas. Guiding the course are the five basic WIDA Standards with particular emphasis on reading and listening skills in language arts, science, social studies and mathematics.
Course is to be offered in conjunction with IEL I: Communications Skills I.   Prerequisite:  Placement by IWC or ESOL Dept Head
IEL Oral Communication in the Content Areas II
This course supports and enhances listening and speaking skills in the content areas and references the five basic WIDA standards with emphasis on the listening and speaking skills in the content areas. The suggested proficiency level of the student is PL 1-3. This course is to be offered in conjunction with IEL II: Communications Skills II.
Current Topics in Reading 1-4 (ESOL)
This course contains the same GPS standards as Current Topics in Reading I. Adaptations in presentation are made to accommodate the needs of ESOL students. Prerequisite:  Recommendation of IWC or ESOL Teacher
Math Study Skills ESOL
This course is designed to prepare the ESOL student for success in Algebra.
Prerequisite:  Placement by the ESOL Department Head or ESOL Math teacher
Study Skills ESOL for GHSGT
This course is designed to prepare the ESOL student for the Georgia High School Graduation Tests.  
Prerequisite:  ESOL 10th – 12th grade AND Recommendation by ESOL teacher
Academic Language of Science and Math
Focuses on teaching students with interrupted or limited formal schooling to decode the specialized vocabulary, symbols and text in science and mathematics.

Cobb Celebrates National French Week With Competition

In celebration of National French Week, the Cobb County School District held the third annual Cobb County French Competition on Saturday, Nov. 10 on the campus of Kennesaw State University. The university’s Department of Foreign Languages and Office of International Programs and Services collaborated with the District to host the event. KSU international students from North African and Sub-Saharan African countries served as volunteers.
