COURSE TITLE: Spanish II TEACHER: Ms. Michele Gorenstein EMAIL: Michele.gorenstein@cobbk12.org PHONE #: 678-842-6850 CHS WEBSITE: http://www.cobbk12.org/~campbellhs EXT: 588 COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Level II language course focuses on the continued development of communicative competence in the target language and understanding of the culture(s) of the people who speak the language. It assumes that the students have successfully completed a Level 1 course and are at a Novice-Mid level of proficiency. In order to view entire curriculum, go to and check the appropriate language and level.
GRADING POLICY: Homework, Class work and Participation 40% Tests and Projects 30% Quizzes 15% Final Exam 15%
COURSE MATERIALS: Students will be issued a textbook and workbook. They will be required to bring workbook in daily. All students will be required to bring the following: · 3-ring binder to class daily · Paper, pens and highlighter · Index Cards · Journal (any one will do!) · Bilingual Spanish / English dictionary
TEXTBOOK: Ven Conmigo! ($52.95)In addition to the text, the students will receive a workbook. The students are permitted to write in these workbooks, but if the workbook is lost it will need to be replaced at a cost of $13.35.
RULES: All school policies will be followed in class. In addition to those policies I have 3 rules… · Be Respectful (To other students and all authority) · Be Considerate (Don’t talk while the teacher or another student is addressing the class.) · Be Polite (Don’t work on homework for others classes during my class.)
PARENT COMMUNICATION: Parents play a very important role in their children’s education and therefore, it is important that parents know what is going on in their child’s classroom. Each student’s grades will be available through I-parent which can be accessed from the School’s web page at http://www.cobbk12.org/~campbellhs/ I can be contacted through my e-mail address or by phone. My contact information is listed at the top of the syllabus. I prefer to contact parents through e-mail because it can eliminate weeks of playing phone-tag and parents can stay up-to-date through out the semester.
CLASS PARTICIPATION AND BEHAVIOR: All students will start off the year with 100% in class participation and behavior. Everyone is expected to come to class Prepared with their Spanish notebook, textbook and a pen or pencil. Each time a student comes to class unprepared the Student will lose one point off their class participation & behavior average. Students will be called on randomly during the Class to answer questions and give opinions. On days when I am assessing class participation I will use my roster to make sure every student has been called upon. The student must contribute to the class at least once to avoid being docked points. Points will also be taken away for not contributing during group work. It is important for everyone to feel comfortable in class therefore; Points may be deducted if there is any name calling or behavioral issues in class. TECHNOLOGY: An important component of language classes is the use of the language beyond the classroom in the real world. The integration of technology is an important tool in accessing authentic information in the target language and in providing students the opportunity to interact with native speakers. Therefore, access to a computer may be required during or after class. Students will often have the opportunity to work in the Language Lab or with laptops. Violation of Lab rules will result in disciplinary action or loss of points on the assigned task. A student absence on a Lab assignment will require the student to schedule a make-up Lab day after school within three days of the absence.
HOMEWORK: Homework is assigned on a regular basis. Homework may be graded for completion only, or for accuracy, at the teacher’s discretion. Late homework will not be accepted, except for in the case of an excused absence.
Tests - Tests will be given at the end of each unit. They will always be announced several days in advance.
Projects – All projects will count as one test grade.
Quizzes – Quizzes will be given frequently and at times may be unannounced.
REPORT CARDS: Report cards are given out three times throughout the semester. Students will be made aware of these days once the semester begins. Grades are also accessible to the parents throughout the semester over the internet.
LATE WORK POLICY: Late work is only accepted with a valid excused slip. No other late work will be accepted.
TARDY POLICY: Students must be on time for class; there is a seven minute break between classes when students may visit their lockers, go to the restroom, etc. A tardy will only be excused if the student has a pass from another teacher explaining the necessity for the tardy. Disciplinary action for tardiest will occur if there are repeat offences.
HALL PASSES: Students are given permission to leave the classroom to go to the restroom only once a week. Leaving the classroom cuts into instruction time, therefore it is necessary to stay in class to get full credit for class work and participation.
ATTENDANCE AND MAKE-UP POLICY: Because of the emphasis on oral and listening skills, student attendance is extremely important. A student who is present and actively participates is more likely to be successful; however, if a student is absent, he/she has three school days to make up assigned work. After three days, a zero will be given for the missed work. Quite often work that has been missed in class can only be made up with the teacher before or after school. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for their missing assignments and to schedule a time within the five school days in order to make up work.
