IB Program

IB Potluck Dinner Feb 12

The Annual IB Potluck Dinner will be held Thursday, February 12th from 6:30 - 8:00 PM.  It's a great way for faculty, students, and parents to share some fantastic food in a fun, social environment. 

Download the IB Potluck Dinner flyer to learn specifics about the menu--each grade level is assigned particular items to bring.  Our hope is that each family will bring a dish that is part of their culture or heritage so that we can share in an authentic international experience.  We will have plenty of plates, cups, napkins, and other supplies on hand.  We always need volunteers to help organize and run the event, so feel free to let us know if you want to help!

One special note: please avoid using peanuts, any tree nuts, or sesame seeds in any food made for the Potluck Dinner.  Some students may have a severe allergy to these things, and we want to prevent any problems from happening that night.  If you plan to bring/make a dish that has those ingredients, please make sure it is clearly labeled so all the students know.

9th Grade Advisement for Magnet/IB Students

Magnet/IB students and parents will meet with Mr. Penick (not the homeroom teacher) in February to complete a four year course of study.  It's a quick and easy process that helps give structure for all of the years in our program--and it's required by the state for us to do it.  There was some confusion about this process due to a general communication from the school, and we hope this makes it more clear for our group.  We will send letters or emails soon about the specific date and time for the appointments. 

CHS Fencing Team

The CHS Fencing Team will be making a short presentation about the team at Open House on Thursday, January 29th.  They are also having a silent auction of several items during the open house: 

 -A tub donated by Canyon Bath (valued at $1400), a heart rate variability mentoring session/stress management biofeedback tool (valued at $50), and other small items. 

-Dunwoody Fencing Club is also offering one free month of either group or private lessons to those interested in fencing.

All proceeds will be given to the Fencing Team. Currently, all members of the CHS Fencing Team are IB students, so we need lots of support from both parents and students!

At the last tournament, all CHS team members advanced to the next round of the tournament (even three first-time fencers!), and everybody is doing extremely well. 

If you're interested in joining the team or seeing what practice is like, feel free to come to practice, which is every Thursday in the weight room below the Nash Gym. 

CHS IB Assessment Calendar

Below is the calendar of IB Assessments for spring 2015.  IB Juniors and Seniors have a series of things to complete, and it's important that all deadlines are met.  Please review the calendar to be sure you have a clear understand of when your assessments are due.  The official AP/IB Exam Schedule for May will be released when we have specific dates, times, and locations to share.

Congrats to CHS Swim/Dive!

Congratulations to the Spartan Swim and Dive Team for outstanding performances at the County Championships this past weekend. 

Highlights for the Spartans include:

David Bullock taking 4^th place in Diving.

Hunter Seibert taking 5^th place in Diving.

Grant Brown making finals in the 200 Individual Medley.

The Spartan 200 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay’s made finals and were swam by Ben Kirk, Grant Brown, Kyle Ganeriwal, Jacobus Janse Van Rensburg, and Nico Luzom.

 

Highlights for the Lady Spartans include:

Addie Howser taking 3^rd place in Diving and setting a new school record!

The 200 Medley Relay swam by Maya Hughes, Mia Price, Jeni Vaia, and Sydney Reynolds set a new school record! Not only did they make Finals, but were joined by the 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relays in finals with teammates Catherine Garmong, Madison Koenig, and Leandra Wilder.

Sydney Reynolds qualified for the State Meet in the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Backstroke along with setting a new school record in the 100 backstroke!

Mia Price made finals in the 100 Free and 100 Breast and is already qualified for the State Meet.  Mia set a new school record in the 50 Free!

Overall the Lady Spartans improved from their 11th place finish last year with a 9^th place finish, just edging out rival Marietta by 1.5 points, and placing in the top 10 for the first time ever!

Holiday Donation Drive

Students and Parents:  
CHS IB students are collecting items to benefit young teens in need at the City of Refuge in downtown Atlanta. www.cityofrefugeatl.org. 

Items needed are:  
socks, laundry & dish detergent, gallon ziploc bags, paper products, G&PG movies, AA&AAA batteries, journals & notebooks, craft supplies, MARTA cards, women's clothing (new or slightly used).  

Boxes for items will be provided in all 1st block IB classrooms and the IB Office. Collection will be accepted until Tuesday, December 17th. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!!

Graduation Information

Campbell High School graduation will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 23 at the KSU Convocation Center. This is for ALL students graduating from CHS this year.  Information regarding tickets and the event will be provided in late spring.

Please note that the IB Senior Ceremony will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 16 at CHS. This event is designed to recognize the IB seniors for their effort and achievements, but it is not a separate "graduation" ceremony.  Families will get more details on this event in May.

Deadline for Applications is Friday, December 5

All applications for admission for the 2015-2016 school year must be completed by this Friday, December 5, 2014; anything entered into the portal after that date cannot be accepted.

Service Opportunity

Looking for a chance to earn CAS hours and give back to the community before Thanksgiving?  Here are the details about a service opportunity:

Who: 7 Bridges to Recovery— a non-profit Christian organization working to end homelessness in Atlanta. They have a home for 105 women and children and a program for 25 men all rescued from the streets.

What: Volunteers will be helping to make 700 meals for Saturday’s ministry on the streets, where the volunteers go into Atlanta and pass out the meals to the homeless.

Where: 2840 Plant Atkinson Road  Smyrna, GA 30080

When: Friday, November 21. Volunteers will meet at the above address at 7 PM.

GA Tech Women in Engineering Event

The Georgia Tech Women in Engineering Program is excited to announce its 1^st Students Exploring Engineering (SEE) event for female freshmen and sophomores in high school.

 SEE is a one-day event that offers female high school freshmen and sophomores the opportunity to explore the possibilities of engineering.  The day is filled with a multitude of activities:  a brief introduction of the various engineering disciplines, faculty lab visits, interactive projects, and a campus tour.  In addition, attendees have the chance to meet with a GT Admissions Counselor to find out about the admissions process and the academic requirements necessary to be successful in engineering undergraduate programs. 

This year's SEE event will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2015 from 8:30AM to 4:00 PM in the Georgia Tech Student Center Ballroom. 

The non-refundable registration fee for SEE is $25.00, which covers all materials ,breakfast and lunch for each girl attending the program, and breakfast for parents or guardians and teachers.
